Updated tattoo photos in the gallery again. Including the old decrepit gallery washed up on the shores of the Chopstick HP. Sorry it took me so long to get around to that.

This weeks Ikebana! Auuughh… I don’t want to type this in English… Ok, 1 set of flowers – two distinct styles! Since this week we have only long and tall flowers to work with we chose styles suitable for such flowers. The style on the left is rather orthodox with the flowers brought to the front, hiding most of the water. BUT if you look in the upper corner, you can still see a proper amount peeking through! On the left is a different style altogether. Rather than concerning itself with overall form, the main goal of this arrangement is to adequately show “line” “surface” and “mass.” It’s more free form, so you can really go wild with it!

Gotch and Gakkin's Fudou

The gang at Harizanmai finished up that Fudou they were painting in my last post! Here it is!

戎 OR 恵比寿!!!Festival of Monetary – Here comes Evisu!

What terrible economy? Look at this! A festival for money!? How very Osakan! Merchants and scum everywhere – Every year since I came to Osaka I show up (moreso for the food than the “luck” and “money”)

Blingin' Branches by the bushel!

Better than lame-o “Palm Sunday!” Everyone’s got one to celebrate filthy lucre!!!

Blingin Branch

One for me too! Free! Thank you monks!

Selling Shit for Branches

Well, the branch is free but the stuff you hang on it sure isn’t. 2 Items cost me over 7000Yen. What’s!? Some people were walkin around here with branches chock full of these things – at least 100x more than mine!

Money Pit!!!

At the heart of this evil festival – the money pit! People usually toss a few cents at an altar box, but this is sheer ludiocrity! Entire wads of bills, and even a Louis Vitton wallet stuffed with ca$h. Scrooge McDuck would be envious.

Fried Stuff

Well, you can’t eat money (though you can buy eats with money I guess… hmm) so it’s off to gorge myself.

Saza-ee-san!

Sazae! The traditional shellfish of winter!

Sazae

Ayashii Jinbutsu

And then everyone (with more stuff on their branches than me) started showing up!

Manekiaho

The manekineko lucky cat that I will always be too cheap to buy – oh the irony!

Fudomiou

Hey! It’s that ol’ Fudo from back in the day last summer when I went bikin’ around temple hopping! I didn’t even recognize the area transformed by the Evisu festival, what with all the gold and food.

Balloon Fry

It’s Balloon! The ex-sumo mic-master… working part time at this great po-tay-to fry stand.

Saseboaho!

Ahh! All the prices are dropping as the event draws to a close! Who could say no to discount sasebo burgers?!

Trashpile yay

*Barf!* a mountain of trash! Hard to know if this is a result of the festival or a natural trashpile that manifests itself each night in Naniwa-ku. I much preferred the filthy pile of money.

Unmovable!Here comes

Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

Kyoto may be the most famous city in Kansai for it’s temples, but few people realize that Osaka is traditionally a temple town in its own right. While Shitennouji is probably the most well known, every neighborhood in Osaka is dotted with smaller temples, each with their own unique artifacts. Today on the way to work I decided to take the scenic route and check out a few of these lesser known spots in my own neighborhood to see what treasures they held. I found that a surprising number of them pay homage to the deity Fudo (Also known as Acala) Myō-ō, principal deity of the great kings.

In the tradition of Japanese television I decided to attach arbitrary rank to them proportional to the amount of ass that they kick. Here goes:

My first stop was a small street sandwiched behind a Super Tamade supermarket between Daikoku-cho and Nippon-bashi. Inside I found this Fudo – Obviously not much in the HP department. If it weren’t for the carefully crafted spirit shield and pine sprigs I probably would’ve only given this guy one lantern. I was about to split but decided to peek inside the temple itself where I found this:

まず、近所の玉出の後ろにはさんでいるちっちゃいお寺。このちびがおった。HPは大分低そう。もし、周りの飾り物がなかったら、絶対1提灯しか付けてあげない。ちょうど出ようと思った時、別のビルを気付いた。中にはこれがあった;

Holy shit! Look at this scary bastard! You can’t even see him from the outside – with all the glare on the glass I had to climb up onto the wall and push my camera up against the window to get a clear shot. The spooky electric candles add significantly to the creepy aura! 4 Lanterns!

Next stop – another Fudo temple. Again, weak like the first one. Sure, he’s made of stone, but the complete lack of a paint job makes his look pretty non-threatening. I gave him an extra half-lantern anyway since he has those guys on either side that heal him like the end boss in Final Fantasy X.

Ok, maybe it’s not fair to pick on this but… boo! It’s not even 3D!… Even as 2D Fudo renderings go this is pretty bad. He looks annoyed having to wait for a bus rather than vigilantly seeking demons to quell.

Right off the Dontonbori river is this guy – the Mizu-kake fudo! People have been throwing water on him for so long his features are completely concealed by boss. Not only does he also have 2 Jizo-dudes to heal his HP when it get’s low, but little Osakan Obaa-chans are constantly throwing life-water on him like every 3 minutes. Plus there’s a gateway leading up to him plastered with Senjafuda and about 100 lanterns bearing his name. 5 Lanterns!

Of course not every structure of worship in Osaka that pays homage to invisible deities is traditional.

Snake…?

Snaaaaake!
