A pint sized brain

Durb Morrison of Hell City was kind enough to invite me to participate in the Pint Sized Paintings art project (Vol. II) Unfortunately I won’t make Vol. I which is travelling around the world to various conventions etc. (Including Hell City in 2010 no doubt) The project is simple – 2 canvases approximately 50mm x 75mm. Hope I have some single hair brushes lying around for this one.

just a box!

Today, this big ol’ honkin’ box arrived at the shop! What treasures await!?

Damn Matryoshkas!

And inside is… Another box! It’s like those damn russian dolls! (Seriously Eric, thanks for packin’ these well – he even sleeved ‘em for me! Woot!)

Better than the original

Is it possible that the coloring is even better than the original?

Obligatory plug for the Wild Zero folks

Gotta take a sec to plug Wild Zero and thank Eric for his help on these. Not only has this guy saved the world more than once, but the quality of the prints was amazing – far surpassing my expectations. The quality of the paper was high and there was not a single mistake in the entire lot – which I cannot say for so many other companies I have dealt with in the US. I dare to say that the color quality exceeds even the original!

But Eric is also a tattoo artist and so when you leave a job up to someone in your industry, you know that they are going to have a similar mindset toward the work and treat it with care. Thanks again brother!

Down an endless road to the boundlessness of infinity

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

Ashes to ashes, stardust to stardust. It is hard to believe that half a year has passed since my comrade Hiderow completed his journey in our world and rejoined the universe. Even though it has taken those of us who knew and loved him some time to resign ourselves to the idea that we shall not meet him again in this space and time, we are thankful for the legacy that Hiderow left behind – through his life and by extension, his art.

Now the time has come to celebrate that legacy in full force.

Horie-2009-Shirts

Finally, the fabled Horie shirts are done and out! What should have taken days took months… (from now on, no more middlemen – really. I mean it this time. You all heard me say it and google has archived it.) Anyway, our first master/apprentice combo design. Wataru did the snake, and I did the flowers, vines, bugs, etc.

This thing is only at Horie and there’s not many of them – come by and grab it while you can!

sticker flaking nastiness

The coils on my Paul Rogers shader started balding so I thought I’d try my hand at sealing them.

bald coils

First, scraped off the old cruft.
Um… Then think about a design. Since there are two coils, I thought Osaka manzai comedians (they come in pairs as well) would fit perfectly. (Starting with Downtown) But I couldn’t get any good image results on the net…

bannar-cbs08

Until that is, I stumbled upon this site “Cutting Sweet Bitter. This guy Kato is a Tokyo artist who specialized in ‘kirie’ or images cut out of a single sheet of paper. I didn’t want to just use it and post it here, so I mailed Kato and asked for his permission.

a design appears!

Kato said cool since it was for personal use (Thank you!!!) and I was able to continue on with my repairs. First measure the size (to get the length of ‘wrap’ simple use some pi action on the radius of the coil and then tack on a couple millimeters for overlap) – PS like that cutting sheet?

color sides on thick paper

But Copy paper is crummy and cheap and gets dirty easily I discovered… So I remade the image with a black background, printed it on proper photo paper and colored the ‘white’ edges so they wouldn’t stand out.

shrink tube

Next cut, stick inside the tube, line it up, and then shrink the tube with a lighter.

Downtown Shader!!!

Slice off the excess, reassemble the machine, make sure the coils are realigned properly and bam! A Downtown shader with some personality!

Shige - the book

Got my hands on it today. Congratulations Shige – you deserve it brother!!

(This volume is amazing. Not only because of the quality of it’s content but also because it’s simply a beautiful tome – from the layout to the nomenclature… including the new book smellTM! Beautifully done. If you’re reading this and didn’t reserve your copy I’d get on it – this is a limited edition – especially in Japan. )
