Etymology and Origin:
2006–2009; Japn, = poke pocket + shiko masturbate
Japan is once again being swept by a new and unique social phenomenon. Known as “Pokeshiko,” it is thought to have originated in the Kansai region (known for it’s dark cutting humor). What began as a simple “Shimoneta” (potty gag), ‘pokeshiko’ has not only entered daily speech, but has also spawned a culture all it’s own. While the act of ‘self-pleasure’ itself is certainly nothing new, the widespread acts of discreet public performance of the act has finally reached a saturation point.

Stickers, T-shirts, stencils and the like which proselytize the phenomenon as a way of life began popping up among various subcultures, ranging from Hip-hop and reggae artists to everyday salarymen and OLs – underscoring the point that ‘self-pleasure’ is common to all humanity and works to bring us together by crossing social and cultural boundaries. Homeless or wealthy, male, female, or in-between, pokeshiko is clearly becoming a dominant force in everyone’s lives.
